A Walk Down Memory Lane

The Formative Years

1950
March 24, 1950
The Original Meeting of the Minds
Conception of the Credit Union
Dog racing Engine 7 to the Fire Alarm - Syracuse Fire Department 1908

In early 1950, at the urging of Leonard Aylesworth, of the Syracuse Transit, a meeting to organize the Syracuse Fire Department Employees Federal Credit Union was called to order. At that meeting, Mr Aylesworth spoke in regards to the benefits that could be derived from the formation of a credit union. Mr Aylesworth was also accompanied by a gentleman from Son Oil(The name of this person was not remembered by any of the existing first members). Representing the Syracuse Fire Department at that meeting were ten gentlemen who later went on to request the original charter.

Charter Granted Approval of Organization
The Syracuse Fire Department Employees Federal Credit Union is Born!

On February 28, 1950, the ten originating members requested the organization of the Syracuse Fire Department Credit Union. Charter No.6627 was granted approval of organization on March 24, 1950.

The original common bond was the Syracuse Fire Department, which made it an occupational bond. Today, it is still an occupational bond that has expanded to include the City of Syracuse, the Syracuse Police Department Employees, immediate family members and more! The original field of membership was to be limited to those who were active and retired employees of the Syracuse Fire Department, employees of the Credit Union, members of their immediate families, and organizations of such persons.

Official First Location at Tracy Street
From Locker to Station to Official Location!

The original office (after originating in a locker at a local engine house) for the Credit Union was in the home of Francis “Tex” McLaughlin, who was elected the first Secretary & Treasurer. In 1957, upon the death of Mr. McLaughlin, Francis Maheny was elected to replace him, with Mr. John Smith becoming assistant treasurer.

Through the years, the Credit Union has seen many changes. Its offices went from the first at Mr. McLaughlin’s home, to Engine House 19, to Engine House 6, to Engine House 12. With the purchase of the building at 320 Tracy Street in 1979, the Syracuse Fire Department Employees Federal Credit Union found a permanent place to call home.

At the time when the Credit Union offices were located at Mr. McLaughlin’s home and at the Engine Houses all monies for deposits or loan payments were made to collectors located throughout the Syracuse area in each of the Engine Houses.

With the expansion into the new building in 1979, the members found the implementation of a new online system. This gave them immediate access to their accounts and found their transactions updated right before their eyes.

First Firehouse Office
Engine House 19

Now a remarkable historical firehouse landmark of Syracuse, Engine House 19 (now known as the Le Moyne College Firehouse) has been mostly vacant and unused since 1998. The Syracuse Fire Credit Union called this firehouse home for a short time around 1960.

And Another Firehouse!
Engine House 6

The Syracuse Fire Credit Union called this station home for a short time. Located on the corner of Jefferson and Clinton. When the Fire Prevention and Chief’s office left Station 12, the CU left this location and moved its headquarters there.

This Was a Trend for a While 🙂
Engine House 12

Fun fact, when we moved to Engine House 12, it was the third floor and the first time we had an actual tiny teller counter! Wow!!! Before this, we operated out of the lockers in the stations. The Credit Union remained here until the move to Tracy Street.
